Gloucester City (Holy City - nick name) is a city in Camden County, New Jersey, United States.


  1. Gloucester City is cited by some as the place of birth of rock and roll. Bill Haley & His Comets — formerly a country music band called "Bill Haley and the Saddlemen" — were the house band on stage at the Twin Bar for 18 months starting in 1952 and are said to have customized their performing way while on stage there to an early on form of rock and roll.
  2. Gloucester Point Grounds is a former baseball ground placed in Gloucester City that was the part-time home to the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association from 1888 to 1890.
  3. During the 18th Century, it is laid down by the Delaware River is where Betsy Ross had been married. Now, the house where she had been wed is no longer there.
  4. In 1881, American artist Thomas Eakins finished two versions of "Shad-Fishing at Gloucester on the Delaware River". A watercolor description is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, while an oil on canvas version is on present at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, just across the Delaware River from Gloucester City.
