Fireworks set for Saturday night in Clark County

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Firework displays on the 4th of July have long been annual traditions in cities across the U.S. and are as American as the country's birthday itself.

Although, with municipalities coping with budget issues and low tax revenues, many cities are cutting back and doing away with their annual firework displays this year.

But residents of Clark County can feel fortunate that they'll have a fireworks show to attend this weekend to celebrate Independence Day.

The Old Fashioned Country Fireworks organized by the National Trail Parks and Recreation District are set for Saturday at the Clark County Fairgrounds.

The gates will open up at 6 p.m. and the fireworks will be shot off beginning around 10 p.m.

The event will also include live music and food vendors.

Springfield City Commissioner Kevin O'Neill told the Springfield News Sun that the event is paid for almost entirely through donations.

Some contributors couldn't give this year with the slow economy, said O'Neill, but about 65 businesses and individuals still donated.

The night will cost $25,000 to put on and O'Neill said that roughly $21,000 has been pledged. Carry over dollars from last year will have to be used to cover the remaining costs.

Officials are estimating a crowd of 10,000 to 15,000 to watch the fireworks.
